About Us

The Chairís and the Boardís role and function are separate from those of the Ministry of Transportation. The Board is comprised of a cross-section of Albertans selected through a public recruitment process. The Board reports directly to the Minister of Transportation through the Chair.

The Board has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (pdf 74KB) with the Minister responsible for the Alberta Transportation Safety Board detailing and clarifying the governmentís expectations around the roles, responsibilities, duties, functions, standards of care, policy direction and performance of the Board. The Board Member Appointment Process, Requirements and Qualifications (pdf 20KB)(Addendum) and the Board Members Code of Conduct (pdf 24KB)(Addendum) also form part of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Board Mission Statement

To foster transportation safety by conducting fair, timely and independent appeals of driver, vehicle and railway safety decisions, in accordance with principles of natural justice.

Board Vision Statement

The Alberta Transportation Safety Board will be known for its excellent adjudicating in the area of transportation safety.

Board Rules of Operation

Pursuant to section 27(2) of the Traffic Safety Act, the Board has in place a set of general Board Rules (pdf 147K) governing its procedure. These rules are provided for the benefit of anyone appearing before the Board.

Public Sector Body Compensation Disclosure

Since 2015, the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act requires agencies, boards and commissions†governed by the Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act†to post online the names and compensation paid to:

  • all board members
  • public sector employees who earn over $126,375
